Funding Examples

Children PlayingThe Greater PineBelt Community Foundation provides extensive donor flexibility in establishing funds and designating charitable beneficiaries. Funds can be named for the donor, in memory of others, or for a designated fund purpose … such as a specific charitable organization.

As an example, funds have been established to benefit organizations which include the Family Y, the United Way of Southeast Mississippi, church building funds, plus college and continuing education scholarships.

Specific Fund Types

Fund types available to Foundation donors:

  • Unrestricted Fund: Unrestricted funds provide the Foundation board of directors with flexibility to allocate grants in response to changing community needs. When funds are available, the Foundation has significant discretion in the allocation of unrestricted fund grants.

Please note that the Greater PineBelt Community Foundation does not currently manage unrestricted funds for general grant purposes. All current funds are in support of charitable organizations, specifically designated by the fund donors.

  • Donor Advised Fund: Using a donor advised fund allows the donor to actively participate in the grant process. Donors retain the right to serve as advisors to the Foundation board of directors, in establishing grant allocations. A Donor Advised Funds brochure with additional details is available here.

  • Designated Fund: Donors use a designated fund to specify the beneficiary for the life of the fund. For example, the donor may designate one or more specific organizations to receive Foundation grants.

  • Field of Interest Fund: The field of interest fund is used to assure Foundation grant support for areas of specific interest to the donor. For example, a field of interest in child development assures grants to youth oriented community activities. Foundation discretion in fund allocations is limited to the specified field of interest.

  • Organization Fund: Non-profit organizations may create funds using Foundation services to manage financial investments and endowment administration. The organization works closely with the Foundation in establishing fund allocations.

  • Pass-Through Funding: Individuals or organizations may obtain the benefits of a private foundation, without the burden of administration, by using the Foundation as a pass-through for charitable donations. Funds are simply passed through the Foundation to a designated charity. There is no lasting endowment associated with pass-through funding.
