Restoration
of the Old High School Begins
“The week
before the May 29, 2007 arson fire, we had put the envelope restoration drawings
out for bids. The fire caused the project to come to a screeching halt,” said
Sarah Newton, architect and Immediate Past President of the Historic Hattiesburg
Downtown Association.
Steel
beams are now stacked at the Old High School site and that's very
good news. A contractor
has been named, and Phase I is getting underway and construction materials
are on the site.
Phase
I includes erection of a steel structure inside the original facade,
anchoring the existing facade to the steel structure, reconstructing the
front facade section removed for safety, and sealing the building.
Cornerstone Campaign
Continues
Several months
ago the Historic Hattiesburg Downtown Association launched The Cornerstone
Campaign to rally financial support for the Old High School Restoration Project.
The
cost for this initial phase of the restoration process will be $1.8 million.
Despite seeing Phase I underway, The Cornerstone Campaign is still active,
to help complete needed project funding.
The initial
Cornerstone Campaign was seeking 1,000 people who will each invest $100
in the restoration
of the Old High School. These funds will
support Phase I and help move forward to a more advantageous
funding position for the future.
